E-invoicing is coming for every VAT-registered Nigerian business. Most SMEs have time, but the companies that are ready early will avoid a scramble, and their invoices will already be the kind that corporate clients process fastest.
What is e-invoicing in Nigeria?
E-invoicing means invoices are issued in a structured electronic format and validated by the tax authority in real time, instead of being PDFs or paper that only the client sees. Nigeria's system is the Merchant-Buyer Solution (MBS), run by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) under the fiscalisation provisions of the new tax laws.
Each invoice is reported to the NRS as it's issued. The NRS can then match your output VAT to your client's input VAT claim, which closes gaps that allowed under-reporting.
When does it apply to my company?
Published NRS timelines phase the rollout by taxpayer size:
| Taxpayer group | Annual turnover | Go-live | Enforcement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large taxpayers | Above ₦5bn | 2025 onwards | Already being enforced |
| Medium taxpayers | ₦1bn – ₦5bn | 1 July 2026 | January 2027 |
| Emerging / smaller taxpayers | Below ₦1bn | 1 July 2027 | January 2028 |
Timelines can move. Check the NRS's latest announcements for your category.
What changes for an SME?
- Invoices must be issued through, or connected to, an accredited system that talks to the MBS.
- Invoice data must be complete and consistent: your Tax ID, the client's Tax ID for B2B supplies, correct VAT, unique sequential numbering.
- Corrections become formal. You can't quietly edit an issued invoice. You cancel it or issue a credit note.
- Your clients will check. When their input VAT depends on your invoice being validated, they'll insist on it.
How should I prepare now?
- Use one invoicing system for everything. No more Word templates for some clients.
- Number invoices in a single sequence that never repeats or skips.
- Collect every client's Tax ID. For companies, their CAC RC number now serves as the Tax ID.
- Show VAT on its own line and make sure your VAT registration details are correct.
- Stop editing sent invoices. Cancel and re-issue instead, so your records already follow the rules.
- Ask your software provider about their MBS integration plans before your go-live date.
How BizBooks helps
BizBooks already issues sequential invoice numbers, records client Tax IDs and PO numbers, shows VAT separately, and treats cancelled invoices as cancelled rather than deleted. Direct MBS connection is on our roadmap, and we're following the NRS accreditation requirements. See invoicing.

Yes. It's being phased in through the NRS Merchant-Buyer Solution, starting with large taxpayers and extending to medium and smaller taxpayers on published dates.
When do small businesses need to comply?
Published timelines put taxpayers with turnover below ₦1bn live from 1 July 2027, with enforcement from January 2028. Check the NRS for updates.
What is the MBS?
The Merchant-Buyer Solution is the Nigeria Revenue Service's e-invoicing platform. It validates and records invoices between sellers and buyers in real time.
Can I still send PDF invoices?
You can send a PDF copy to your client, but once your group is live, the invoice must also be issued and validated through an MBS-connected system.
